The Babbel app is my go-to choice for studying Russian. I primarily use it on my mobile device, although it’s also available for desktop computers.
To get started, you’ll need to select your target language and follow the on-screen menu to create an account. Once that’s done, you can choose a subscription plan and begin your language journey. The subscription typically costs a maximum of $6 and can be easily canceled at any time. What I particularly appreciate about this app is the option to set a weekly learning goal, allowing you to tailor your studies to your schedule and needs.
Babbel’s approach to teaching is highly structured and repetitive. You’ll start by learning essential vocabulary, and gradually, they introduce grammar concepts step by step. An integral part of the learning process is the regular review of previously learned material, which significantly aids in retention. As with most forms of learning, repetition is key to success.
I recently completed the A1 beginners’ course, which enabled me to master the Russian alphabet, grasp basic pronunciation rules, and learn fundamental words along with some essential grammar concepts.
With consistent effort, I can now read simple texts and even recognise some words borrowed from other languages when encountering them in Russian texts. When listening to Russian, I’ve reached a point where I can understand small fragments of conversation. While it might not be incredibly useful just yet, it’s a good start to my language journey.
